Qualifications

To qualify for an initial appointment (4-year term) to the office of notary public in the State of Texas, one must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age or older.

  • Be a legal resident of the State of Texas. (No certain length of time is required to establish residency).

  • Have no criminal convictions. (A criminal conviction is not an automatic denial to become a Texas notary public).

  • Submit an application to be appointed a notary public, and pay a $21 State appointment fee.

  • Obtain a surety bond in the amount of $10,000, available from The American Association of Notaries!

    No discounts are given on bonds or errors and omissions insurance policies. Notary package excluding the bond is available for $29.99 Plus $5.95 for shipping (item P101). Requests for refunds on all incomplete orders must be in writing.

    You can add additional Texas notary supplies to the above package. We highly recommend an Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance policy for your protection. The bond protects the public you serve – errors and omissions insurance policy protects you!

IMPORTANT: The Secretary of State does not have an online system for accepting applications completed and submitted online. Only MAILED applications with original signatures are currently accepted (DO NOT FAX). Your notary application also contains your personal information (S.S. #, D.L., DOB and address). If security is an issue do not store it or save it online.
